Skauz

for everyone who stops to look.

A map of the wildlife around you. See what’s been spotted nearby, look up species, and log your own sightings, from the duck at the pond to the owl you’re fairly sure you heard last night.

Peek at the early build

Expect paint that’s still drying.

The Skauz owl: a forest-green owl with amber eyes in front of pine trees

Early days. Rough edges included.

Skauz is in active development. Some features are missing, some will change, and the occasional bug may appear. The software kind, mostly.

What it does (so far)

Go outside. Look closer.

  1. 01

    Scout the map

Zoom into any area and see which species have been observed there. Zoom out too far and it politely asks you to zoom back in.

  2. 02

    Search species

Type “tawny owl”, or just “duck”, and find out what lives where.

  3. 03

    Log your sightings

Record what you saw, where, and how sure you are. Every sighting has a story, even the blurry ones.

  4. 04

    Saved searches

Keep the species you’re on the lookout for one tap away.

  5. 05

    Private by default

Your sightings stay yours until you decide to share them. Locations are verified before anything goes public.

  6. 06

    Built on open data

Observations come from GBIF, the Global Biodiversity Information Facility. In other words: a whole planet of very patient people with binoculars.

Privacy

Private until you say so.

A rare owl’s nest doesn’t need an audience. That’s why nothing you log is public by default, and verification never changes that. Sharing is always your call.

  1. 01
DraftYou log a sighting. Only you can see it.
  2. 02
VerificationThe species name and location get checked.
  3. 03
VerifiedReady to share, but still private.
  4. 04
PublicOnly if you say so. Never automatically.
